Regalo Top Of Stairs Expandable Metal Gate

Regalo Top Of Stairs Expandable Metal GateThe idea of fitting safety gates on the top of stairs is just to ensure the security of your child even when you get busy with some work. Furthermore, it helps you in containing your pet on that floor.

This expandable metal gate flaunts its universal design which allows custom fitting, smooth gliding on both sides and easy installation through hard-rubber banister mounting. Safety gate is about 30.5″ tall and 26″-42″ wide which promise reliability as well as strength. Squeeze Latch may look simple but will be a tough puzzle for your little ones.

Don’t think that banister mounting can ruin your woodwork as this is aptly tested and keep them intact. With limited 90 days warranty from the manufacturer, you can assure its quality properly. It is exclusively designed for stairways.

The moment your child gets 6 months old and starts crawling on the floor make it certain to install this lightweight & expandable metal stair gate in your house by Regalo.
I needed a gate for upstairs where the gate needed to be mounted to two banisters that don’t line up. I didn’t want to have to drill into anything and I wanted to be able to keep the gate open when we’re not upstairs (not autoshut).

This is perfect. It was easy to install although the adhesive on the corner protectors don’t do anything at all (they stick to your banister but not onto the actual piece!) and I dropped them downstairs a couple times while trying to strap them on. It locks up just fine although it takes a little wiggling to get it shut.

One of my banisters is crooked or something because there is a leveling bubble on top of the two sides of the gate and I could not get one side level and attached to the banister for the life of me. No biggie though, everything still works wonderfully and does what I need it to do!

Pros

  • Good Quality Material
  • Easy to Install
  • Great Height
  • One Hand Release Handle
  • Perfect for any-size doorway

Cons

  • Gate has a tendency to slide and loosen, over time.

Evenflo Easy Walk Thru Top of Stairs Gate

Evenflo Easy Walk Thru Top of Stairs GateThis comes in four to five different color combinations. Ideally known as “Baby Gate”, this one is truly apt for your child or pet’s safety.

Just trust on the durability and strength of its gate which promises complete protection to your baby from any harm. It can be used in any part of your house i.e. doorways, hallways, the bottom of stairs, kitchen, laundry rooms, bedrooms as well as playrooms.

The dimensions are 30″ height and width which is expandable from 29″ to 42″. With its “Easy Walk Thru” feature, this safety gate will conveniently swing in either one direction or both for easing walking. In addition to this, the “One hand easy glide” feature will ergonomically simplify its operation and simultaneously make it difficult for children to operate.

The plus point in this is that it comes with a red/green lock indicator that will notify the onlooker whether the door is properly locked or not.

It is important to note that it is ideal for babies and small pets weighing less than 10 lbs.

This gate has the tendency to slide over time and loosen so that the clasp isn’t “green”, instead it’s in the “red” zone meaning it’s not securely tightened and your toddler will pull it and be flying down the stairs in no time. So instead of drilling and putting a bolt, I bought cable ties and tightened it on top and on the bottom so that it CAN’T loosen again no matter how many times you tug on it.

Pros

  • Latch Indicator (Red and Green)
  • Good Quality Material
  • Easy to Install
  • Great Height
  • One Hand Release Handle
  • Perfect for any-size doorway

Cons

  • Gate has a tendency to slide and loosen, over time

Kidco Angle Mount Safeway Pet Gate

Kidco Angle Mount Safeway Pet GateWe have 5 different baby gates throughout our home and without a question, this is best one in every way. Unfortunately for us, it was the last one we purchased and only purchased it because it’s advertised as for an angled opening, which we have at the bottom of our basement stairs.

It quickly and easily mounts to any wall or doorway with screws (included) and a cordless drill and swings effortlessly to a latch that is on the opposite wall, like a door. It also swings completely out of the way depending on where you mount it since it can pivot 180 degrees on its mount on a flat wall and lay against the mounting wall.

You don’t need an angled opening to use it and I would have bought more of these for other spots in our home had I found it and used it sooner. You slightly lift it as it touches the latches and it slides in and locks solidly. It an easy thumb-slide lock, impossible for little ones to open, much easier that other types of gates to use.

It has an attractive gloss black finish on its strong metal bars. Nothing flimsy or cheap about this whole gate. If you need a gate that is mounted to a wall or doorway and semi-permanent with screws this is it.

Pros

  • Sturdy Construction
  • Easy to open
  • Good Quality Material
  • Adjustable width
  • Quick release hardware

Cons

  • No automatic closure
  • Can be difficult to assemble

Kidco Safeway Gate, Top of Stairs Gate

Kidco Safeway Gate, Top of Stairs GateGreat gate! I have them all over my house. I read the other reviews warning about the quality of the included screws, and while I did not have problems, I could see the issue. It looks like the included screws are aluminum – they are very lightweight and stripped very easily.

However, if you know this going in, you can just pre-drill the hole first and you’ll be fine. Drywall screws work well as a replacement if you end up stripping the ones provided.

When assembled, the gate is very sturdy. The gate is basically bolted together at a width close to what you need and then final adjustments are made via the corner adjustment bolts, somewhat similarly to a pressure mounted gate. The BIGGEST advantage to this gate design is the fact that all of the hardware tucks in close to the wall, and the whole gate swings out of the way. You lose almost no width in your opening.

For me, as this was at the entrance to the first set of stairs in a 3 story house, this was critical.

By the way, if you’re wondering how to attach to stairway banister I really recommend the stairway gate install kit from Kidco as well. I’ve attached a picture to show the gate plus adapter at the bottom of my stairs.

I’m the “handy” one of my friends and with the stairway install kit (15-20 min) plus this gate, I was probably at just over 30 minutes total to install. If that seems long, that’s because it kind of was, but much of my time on installing the gate was lost to the so-so instructions.

It has sturdy mounting hardware; a large, clear opening to walk through; and a door that swings only away from the stairs. Beyond all that, parents report that the gate is exceptionally strong and very tough for children to climb since it lacks footholds for small feet. An angle-mount version of the gate also provides a solution for parents who have oddly shaped stairways.

Pros

  • Sturdy Construction
  • Good Quality Material
  • Fairly easy to install
  • Quick Release Hardware

Cons

  • The latch that keeps the gate from swinging out is flimsy and not secure.

What should you look for in the best baby gate for stairs?

The best baby gate has..

A secure, stable mount

Pressure-mounted gates for hallways and doorways should easily maintain tension. Gates for use at the top of stairs must be hardware-mounted in order to prevent children from toppling them.

Easy-to-use latches

If the baby gate will be used in hallways and other busy areas, look for one with doors that open in both directions A single-direction option is better for the top of the stairs and should swing open away from stairs.

Doors that open the right direction

If the baby gate will be used in hallways and other busy areas, look for one with doors that open in both directions A single-direction option is better for the top of the stairs and should swing open away from stairs.

The right height

The best baby gates must be at least 22 inches to obtain certification from the Juvenile Products Manufacturers Association. Better yet, look for one that's at least three-quarters of your child's height to prevent climbing, but don't rely on baby gates to contain children much past age 2.

Parents may find taller gates more convenient since they won't require stooping to use.

Ample durability

Baby gates should be able to handle all manner of toddler abuse without collapsing, including shaking, banging, pulling and climbing. If you like the look of a wooden gate, be sure it has a smooth finish that is free of splinters.

Safe construction

The safest baby gates have a straight top edge with rigid vertical slats or spindles to prevent climbing or a finely woven screen that won't trap fingers or provide footholds for climbers. Slats should be spaced no more than 3 inches apart to prevent head entrapment.

Closer spacing is better, as some toddlers will be able to stand on the bottom bar of the gate with this spacing and ride the door when it opens.

Buying Tips: Before you go and purchase the best top of stairs baby gate

What kind of gap does one need to block off?

If you are barricading the top of stairs, a hardware-mounted gate is a must. If you're blocking a heavily trafficked space that you just often have to navigate along with your hands full, explore for a gate that opens simply and may be kicked shut or closes automatically. A wider gap is also useful further. If you are attempting to dam off an oversized space of an area or a room feature like a fireplace, search for a gate that is detached but can be wall mounted.

What size should the opening be?

Before you shop for a gate, measure all openings carefully both at the lower and also the higher threshold, as openings in older homes or in earthquake-prone areas may not be identical. Write down the measurements and take them to the store with you.

Some gates could include the extensions you would like to suit the threshold, however, you may have to be compelled to purchase extensions individually for alternative gates.

Who is going to be using the gate?

Families with older youngsters who do not need to be gated can encounter multiple areas of potential frustration: Older kids might forget to shut the gates behind them, and some might also struggle to open the toddler-proof latch and end up climbing the gate, which is not safe.

In families with older children, take into account a gate that automatically swings shut, and make certain that older children observe unlatching the gate without help.

Is design something you care about?

While the general public may purchase baby gates with function in mind, makers are progressively recognizing that consumers wish nicer-looking options, too. If you are buying a gate which will be utilized in a high traffic, high-visibility space, think about whether or not you would like something that better blends along with your home's décor.

There are a variety of additional enticing choices that mix wood and metal, incorporate style components like arches, or keep slats and latches sleek and efficient for more modern homes.

Best Baby Gates for Stairs: FAQs

Do baby gates require drilling holes?

Many baby gates offer a stable barrier while not requiring parents to drill holes in walls or doorways. this is undeniably convenient, particularly for renters who need to reduce harm to somebody else's property.

These pressure-mounted gates are straightforward to put in and are usually sturdy enough to be used in most low-risk situations. However, they don't seem to be recommended to be used at the top of stairs because they are not as stable as hardware-mounted gates. Also, even if you do not have to be compelled to drill holes, even pressure-mounted gates will pull paint off walls once removed or tightened, and that they could damage drywall.

Can I use a normal baby gate for the top of the stairs?

The major distinction between traditional baby gates and baby gates for stairs is that the latter are hardware-mounted rather than pressure-mounted. Hardware-mounted gates are hooked up directly to a wall or balustrade using bolts, screws or different hardware.

That lessens the danger that kids can push over the gate and tumble down the steps. Baby gates for stairs may additionally open in precisely one direction and have wider openings without any bars to step over, minimizing the danger that folks or kids will trip. While these gates do need permanent mounts, several of the gates are often removed from the wall mounts once not in use.

Are hand-me-down baby gears, ok?

This a parent favorite for several reasons. Parents say that this gate is sturdy and stable even when shaken or scaled by a determined toddler. Because it’s 34 inches tall (36 at the top of the arch), it’s well-suited for families who need to keep older, taller toddlers or kids from a certain area.

A nice bonus for busy parents who may forget to latch the gate after rushing through is the latch indicator. (Red/Green Lock Indicator: shows if gate is properly locked)

Reviewers do have a small quibble here: They say the gate is quite noisy (highly negligible) when it slams shut. On the bright side, most say installation is easy and, because the gate is tall, there’s little need for most adults to stoop down to operate the latch.
